I’ve always had the San Francisco Chronicle on my mind as I’ve written my four books. In my fictional world, the 1945 newspaper is the San Francisco Prospect instead of the Chronicle, so I’m free to make some things up. But from the very beginning I started my research on Herb Cain at the Chronicle.

That’s why it was especially meaningful to me to read Allison Arieff ‘s interview with me up at the Chronicle. Mostly, I appreciate she let me go on about missing grand jury reports, vanished rape cases, and why buried stories are most meaningful to tell.
