I was a little verklempt when I got the print edition of the San Francisco Chronicle and found Allison Arieff’s interview with me about An Unlikely Prospect right there in the Datebook section of the paper. There’s a pile of reasons why I found this touching. First, all of my books, not just this one, focus on a fictional newspaper, the San Francisco Prospect, which was absolutely inspired by the Chronicle. But also, I suspect I’m a little like both my protagonists, Jane Benjamin and Sandy Zimmer, in that I mostly walk around feeling like an outsider all the time. (I know, imposter syndrome is endemic among the writing population.) So really, just the fact that Arieff chose to read the book and then to do an interview, that arrives as a very welcome gift in a media world in which book coverage diminishes every day. So, you can imagine, sitting at our picnic table in the garden with that article in Datebook laid out before me, that was a lovely way to pass away a little summer time. You can read it here.
