I just got home from a two-week research trip to San Francisco. I’d gone to learn more about a particular week in The City’s history—August 14-21, 1945—the week when President Harry S. Truman announced that Japan had accepted Allies’ terms for unconditional surrender. Like most cities, San Francisco celebrated. Like no other city, San Francisco’s celebration turned into a riot.
